medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Dear Phyllis, You wrote about the st. Clement (Kliment) (835-916) of
"Okhrida (near Velitsa, Bulgaria)".
To be more exact, his monastery of Ohrid (town amd lake) is situated in
southwest of modern state of Macedonia, near modern Greece and Albania,
distant from today Bulgaria.
Beside his missionary work, he wrote a book about St.Cyril, and is
considered to be the creator of the "cyrilliic" scripture, still in use in
SE Europe.
The cultural heritage of Clement (and some other) is claimed by diferent
nations, e.g. Bulgarians and Macedonians. So we can find different
Universities in both states, with his name, Clement of Ohrid.
With best regards, Matej Župancic

Today (17. July) is the feast day of:
.............
Clement of Okhrida and companions (d. 916) Clement was the first Slav to
become a bishop, in Bulgaria in the reign of Khan Simeon.
Clement founded the monastery of Okhrida (near Velitsa, Bulgaria), which
became his primatial see. He was a very successful missionary, and is
regarded as one of the seven apostles of Bulgaria (all commemorated today).
