medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (13. July) is the feast day of:
Silas (1st cent.) Silas was one of the leaders of the early
Christian community in Jerusalem. He ended up accompanying Paul on
his second missionary journey. He may be the same person as the
Silvanus who appears in 2 Cor 1:19. Legend makes Silas the first
bishop of Corinth, reporting that he died in Macedonia.
Eugenius of Carthage (d. 505) Eugenius became Catholic bishop of
Carthage in 481 after the see had been vacant for fifty years (since
the Arian Vandals were in charge). King Huneric forbade E. to take
his see and launched a persecution of catholics. E. soon ended up
exiled to Tripoli, where his keeper, an Arian bishop, treated him
very cruelly. Huneric's successor allowed E. to return in 488; *his*
successor sentenced E. to death, but instead banished him to
Languedoc, where he died.
Henry II (d. 1024) Henry II became king of the Germans in 1002 and
was crowned emperor in 1014. He founded the diocese of Bamberg in
1006 and restored several other sees, besides giving generously to a
lot of churches and monasteries. He played a very active role in
church affairs, including instigating a deeply-hated reform of a
series of imperial monasteries. He was canonized in 1146.
James of Voragine (blessed) (d. 1298) James (Jacopo) was a Dominican
who was famous for his preaching. He held several offices in the
order before becoming archbishop of Genoa. Today he is mostly known
as author of *The Golden Legend*. J's cult was confirmed in 1816.
A modern saint: Francis Solano (d. 1610) Francis was born to a noble
Spanish family. He became an Observant Franciscan and was famous for
his preaching. He asked to go to Peru as a missionary in 1589 and
spent the rest of his life working in South America. He won so many
converts that he got the nickname "Wonder-worker of the New World."
He was canonized in 1726.
