Lynda Bailey, FCO; Wendy Cawthorne, Geological Society; Dr Yolande Hodson;
Pete Jones, DGIA, DGC; Alison Lawson, Queen Mary College; David Sherren,
University of Portsmouth; Mary Spence, Ken Winch, HarperCollins.
2) Minutes of the last meeting and matters arising
The minutes of the last meeting were agreed with one correction: item nine,
Andrew Cook should read April Carlucci. Under matters arising April and
Tinho reported on the progress of the Map Curator's Toolbox, a hard copy of
which was available for consultation and comment. It was also noted that
Joe Nunn had left the BLML. A reappointment would be made.
3) Training
A working group had been set up last year. John Moore apologised for the
delay, but was pleased to announce that an outline programme had been
worked out. A one-day training session was proposed, to be held in
Newcastle in the spring. There would be sessions on Map Cataloguing,
Security, Acquisition, Map Production Techniques, Conservation and Repair,
and the general joys of Map Librarianship. Bob Parry asked to whom the day
was being addressed, to which the answer was the inexperienced novice. The
day would be publicised via e-mail discussion groups and the local studies
libraries journal. Accommodation would probably be in hotels. Dave Watt
recommended a washing up session to gain feedback.
4) Reports
April Carlucci reported on the British and Irish Committee for Map
Information and Catalogue Systems, and noted there were of questions
currently about membership: Mary Spence was to represent the commercial
viewpoint; it was hoped there would be a permanent member from the Ordnance
Survey; and there was a question of the attendance of Northern Ireland
members. Anne Taylor's listing of digital projects was noted. The Legal
Deposit Libraries sub group met prior to each meeting and were currently
discussing photocopying rules and co-operative cataloguing. The next
meeting would be held at the MoD Feltham in November.
Anne Taylor encouraged people to attend the current exhibition of the
mapping of Cambridge at Cambridge University Library. Nick Millea
mentioned the recent Street Mapping exhibition at the Bodleian Library.
The move of the MoD map library from Tolworth to Feltham was noted by Dave
Watt. He said that the move had gone very well.
Diana Webster mentioned that the NLS was undergoing a reorganisation of its
staffing. She also drew attention to the forthcoming Scottish Maps Forum
seminar in Dundee, entitled Scotland Illustrated: mapping and picturing the
nation 1680-1720.
Mick Ashworth recorded thanks and appreciation to Diana Webster and Ann
Sutherland for their organisation of the Edinburgh Three-Day Event. Mr
Carson-Clark warmly invited any members of the MCG into the Carson Clark
Gallery on the Royal Mile when they were next in Edinburgh.
Huw Thomas reported that the NLW map catalogue would be moving from CAIRS
to the main book catalogue.
Rose Mitchell announced a forthcoming guide from TNA on Maps for family and
local history, due to be published in February. She also highlighted the
formation of a new BCS sub group dedicated to Military Mapping.
April Carlucci spoke on behalf of the BLML. She noted that the map
catalogue records were now available on COPAC; the first 2000 records of
the historical MoD mapping were now in automated format; there was a small
exhibition of D-Day mapping in the Map Reading Room lobby; and that
progress was being made with a New Opportunities Fund project to digitise
Ordnance Survey drawings.
Paul Ferguson noted that the Trinity College map collection had moved to
new accommodation in the basement of the James Usher Library.
5) Cartographiti
Tinho da Cruz reported on the progress of Cartographiti (apologetically as
ever). He noted a suggestion from the BCS that Cartographiti move to an A4
format and asked for comment. This was not greeted with much enthusiasm.
The deadline for copy for the next issue was given.
6) LIBER
Anne Taylor announced that the next meeting of LIBER would be held in
Cambridge in a year's time in the week before the BCS symposium.
7) Forthcoming events:
Details of the forthcoming British Records Association Annual Conference:
"On the Map: Maps as historical evidence" had been included with the
delegates' pack. This will take place on 2 December 2003.
8) Any Other Business
Bob Parry drew attention to the special offer from Facet Publishing for
Cartographic Materials: A manual of interpretation for AACR2 2002 Revision.
He also invited people to visit the Map Library on Friday afternoon to leaf
through the duplicate maps for disposal.
Ann Sutherland made a plea for topics for the next year's Map Curators'
Workshop. She then presented a card to Nick Millea congratulating him and
Alice on their forthcoming marriage.
