medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (26. July) is the feast day of:
Anne and Joachim (1st cent.) The parents of the Virgin Mary. They
are named in the apocryphal Proevangelium of James. The story is
that they were publicly mocked for their childlessness, so Joachim
went and fasted forty days in the desert, whereupon an angel appeared
and promised a child. Anne promised to dedicate the child to God.
Simeon the Armenian (d. 1016) Simeon went on pilgrimage to Jerusalem
in 982 and from there on to Rome. He was accused of heresy but
exonerated, and went on to make a tour of the main pilgrimage shrines
of France and Spain. He then settled at the monastery of Padrilirone
near Padua, where he was famous for his holiness and miracles. Pope
Benedict VIII confirmed S's cult.
Moses the Hungarian (d. c. 1043) I had no idea how wild some
Orthodox saints' lives are. Moses was in the service of the saintly
prince Boris. He hid in Kiev after Boris' murder, but in 1018 was
captured by the Poles who attacked Kiev in that year. A Polish widow
fell madly in lust with Moses and wanted to buy his freedom and then
marry him. He refused. She paraded him around her estates so he
could see how rich she was; he took advantage of the opportunity to
have himself tonsured as a monk. She tried beating him with iron
rods. No success. Finally she ordered that he be flogged with 100
strokes every day, and ended up having M. castrated. After that, M.
made his way back to Kiev, where he joined the monastic community at
the Kievan Caves. He is invoked by monks having problems with
chastity.
A modern saint: Bartholomea Capitanio (blessed) (d. 1833) BC was
born at Lovere in the Italian Alps. Her parents refused to let her
become a nun, but she still took a vow of perpetual chastity and set
herself for educating the young. She became co-founder of an
institute, the Sisters of Charity, which won papal approval and
spread. BC herself died at the age of 26. She was canonized in 1950.
