Dear Richard
How interesting that the enquirer has taken our record/image and
contacted you about it?! I have had a few enquiries recently about
Hondius maps so I am not able to remember which one relates to this
particular map. Van der Krogt's reissue of Koeman's cartobibliography
should be able to pinpoint which atlas this plate is from. Our
catalogue record is an old one, done before this work came out.
I cannot help you with the rest of your enquiry!
Yours sincerely

Subject: Hondius map
A plea for information or advice.
An enquirer here has a facsimile if the following map:
Nova totivs terrarvm orbis geographica ac hydrographica tabvla.
Auct:Henr:Hondio.
The dedication is dated 1630. He is trying to discover in which atlas
this
map was originally published.
This map is characterised by a compass rose at the point where the two
hemispheres meet. The enquirer has already ascertained from the National
Library of Australia web site that Hendrik Hondius also published
another
version of this map without the compass rose (other details appear to
correspond):
Author: Hondius, Hendrik, 1597-1651.
Title: Nova totivs terrarvm orbis geographica ac hydrographica tabvla
[cartographic material] / Auct: Henr: Hondio.
Online Resources: http://nla.gov.au/nla.map-nk1531
Scale: Scale [ca. 1:100 000 000]
Publisher: [Amsterdam] : [Doctissimis Ornatissimisq : Viris D:D: Davidi
Sanclaro, Antonio de Willon, et D. Martinio, Matheseos in illustriss.
Academia Parisiensi Professoribus eximiis in verae amicitiae ... D.D.
Henr:
Hondius, 1630.
Description: 1 map : col. ; 2 hemispheres each 26.7 cm. diam. on sheet
49.2
x 59.1 cm.
Notes: Double hemispherical map of the world ; three insets in
decorative
cartouches ; miniature portraits in each corner featuring Mercator,
Hondius, Caesar, Ptolemy ; background features 4 elements.
Verso: 'Description de L'Univers". 2-column text in French, with
marginal
headings.
Signature: A.
Plate from: Atlas minor Geradi Mercatoris a I. Hondio plurimis aeneis
tabulis auctus et illustratus denuo recognit, additisque / Gerardi
Mercatoris et I. Hondii.
The compass rose itself on the facsimile map is labelled in English,
and
appears to be that used by John Speed on his map of Cornwall; the
enquirer
would also like to know how Hondius came to use this, beyond the family
connection that his brother engraved Speed's map.
I would appreciate any information or advice that anyone can give .
