This collection of articles reflects the efforts of
a small group of European medievalists from
differing backgrounds and languages to work
together, through and beyond their varied
viewpoints, for the renewal of the social and
economic history of the Middle Ages.
How did peasants feel about seigneurial exactions
in the Middle Ages? Is it possible to hear
their voices through documents written by and
for lords? One approach to these questions is
historiographical: the notion that the seigneury
should be analyzed as a collection of political
and property rights derived from different
sources has not been adopted by all European
medievalists: Should it be? Does it work when
we examine dues and services through the eyes
of the peasant?

The variety of perspectives presented here intersect in case studies from different
parts of Europe. The meet as well through parallel thematic studies in which
the vast variety of local choices and concerns of peasants combine to form larger
European patterns.

Can franchise charters inform us about peasant opinion? Were labour services
oppressive or occasions for almost festive gatherings? In some regions peasants
easily accepted the tithe while elsewhere they abhorred it. The burden of lordship
could be objectively slight but intolerable or heavy without inciting powerful
resistance. The investigations launched in this work will encourage further
research by other historians for other regions.
