there is a significant literature in anthro about cultures in which the
dominant mode of socialization and social control works around issues of
honor and shame. my personal working definition is cultures in which is
not only legitimate but (if one wants to be a leader or "big man")
necessary to shed the blood of another to preserve or regain one's honor.

my sense is that you are broadly speaking correct. but fortunately
medievalists are a disparate lot, and i'm hoping for something here. after
all, by anthropological definitions, we are all studying honor-shame cultures.
