medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (26. June) is the feast day of:
Vigilius of Trent (d. 405) Vigilius was a Roman noble who studied in
Athens before emigrating with his family to Trent. He became bishop
and was vigorous in suppressing the still-dominant Roman religion of
the area. He went too far when he knocked down a statue of Saturn,
though, and was stoned to death by his outraged flock.
Maxentius of Agde (d. 515) Maxentius was from Agde (near Beziers in
France). He became a monk and abbot of a monastery in Poitou now
called Saint-Maixent-l'Ecole after him. He provided miraculous
protection against Visigoths.
David of Thessalonika (d. c. 540) Davis was from Mesopotamia. He
must have made his way to Thessalonika at a young age, because he was
a hermit outside the city for seventy years. Pavia has had his
relics since 1054.
Barbolenus of Paris (d. c. 677) Barbolenus was a monk of Luxeuil who
became the first abbot of St. Maur-des-Fosses near Paris. He worked
with St. Fursey to found many churches and hospitals in the diocese
of Paris.
Salvius and "Superius" (d. c. 768) Salvius was a suffragan bishop in
the area of Angouleme. He went to Valencienne to convert the
Flemish. Didn't work out well; he was imprisoned and killed, then
the body was buried with an anonymous companion corpse. When the
bodies were exhumed, the other body was nicknamed "Superius," "the
one on top, because that's the way the bodies were found.
Pelagius (Pelayo) of Cordoba (d. 925) When he was eleven, Pelagius
was given as a hostage to the emir of Cordoba. He was held for three
years, offered freedom and favor if he converted, but he refused and
finally was tortured to death by his annoyed hosts.
Anthelm (d. 1178) Anthelm was a Savoyard nobleman who became a
Carthusian. In 1139 he became prior of the Grande Chartreuse and
played an important role in setting up the Carthusians as an
independent religious order. In 1163 he became bishop of Belley,
where he became a model prelate.
