Er, John of Matera. Pulsano's high limestone hill cut by a steep gorge with adjacent gullies and fissures, part of a local karstic terrain, is said to have been a place of eremitic settlement from the sixth century onward; Benedictine communities here date from about the year 1000. John's monastery, Santa Maria del Pulsano, still exists.
