MPH -Master in Public Health NEW COURSE
September 2004 onwards, a new Masters in Public Health (MPH), 1 year
full-time or 2 years part-time, at the School of Health and Related
Research (ScHARR), Sheffield University.
This course is designed with the needs of the 21st century public health
specialist in mind. It provides quality in academic education, as expected
of a University with an international reputation, along with a course
content and approach to teaching tailored to address the needs of
people seeking UK professional qualifications in public health. The
syllabus is designed to address the requirements of the Part 1 MFPH
examination for Membership of the UK Faculty of Public Health.
Individual course modules are designed to provide training in specific
“knows-how” and “shows-how” competencies that current public health
specialists may need in their preparation of a portfolio for entry onto the
Public Health Specialist Voluntary Register.
Core modules for the MPH are (120 credits):
Principles of public health
Needs assessment, planning and evaluation
Research methods for public health
Health promotion
Sociology of health and Illness
Dissertation
A further 40 credits are taken from the following modules:
Understanding organisations
Using sources of routine health information
Understanding the delivery of health care
Health protection
Advanced economic evaluation
Systematic reviews and critical appraisal techniques
Promoting evidence based health care
Qualitative research design and analysis
Further methods in design and analysis of health technology assessment
In addition to the MPH, students can also register for individual
modules, or a Certificate in Public Health (60 credits) or a Diploma in
Public Health (120 credits)
