It is well known that the Russian word vokzál for a railway station derives from Vauxhall in London.
But Vasmer's Russisches Etymologisches Wörterbuch has:
VOKZÁL: `Bahnhof', zuerst foksal: St. Peterb. Vedomosti a. 1777 ...
Entlehnt aus Engl. Vauxhall, einem Lustgarten und Vergnügungsort bei London. ...
bennant nach der Besitzerin Jane Vaux (a. 1615) ... .
Given that Vauxhall is recorded back to 1279 with forms in Faukes- etc., where did this nonsense about
Jane Vaux come from?
