medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (13. June) is the feast day of:
Peregrine of Aquila (d. c.600) Peregrine was bishop of L'Aquila
(Abruzzi). He didn't get along well with Lombards (Arians). When P.
tried to intercede for a condemned prisoner, they not only failed to
release the prisoner but drowned P. in a river.
Rambert (Ragnebert) (d. c. 680) Rambert was an influential Frankish
noble who fell foul of the evil mayor of the palace Ebroin (who seems
to have enabled so many saints to reach a heavenly reward ahead of
time). Ebroin first had R exiled, and then ambushed and murdered in
the Jura mountains. He was venerated as a martyr.
Fandilas (d. 853) Fancilas was an Andalucian, the abbot of
Pena-melaria near Cordoba. He was decapitated for preaching publicly
against Islam.
Anthony of Padua (d. 1231) Anthony was a native of Lisbon. He
became a canon regular, but transferred to the Franciscan order. He
set off to preach to Muslims in the Maghreb, but a combination of
illness and storms took him to Italy instead. There he became a
leading preacher, also noted as a miracle worker. A. was canonized
the year after his death, and was declared a doctor of the church in
1946. He is shown in art with the Christ child (and a lily).
