medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (4. June) is the feast day of:
Metrophanes (d. 325) Metrophanes was apparently the first bishop of
Byzantium, from 313 until his death in 325 (before that the city was
in the diocese of Heraclea).
Nennoc (d. c. 467) Legend says that Nennoc (which means "little
nun"---apparently her real name was Gwen) was a daughter of St.
Brychan who migrated to Brittany and founded a convent at Pleumeur.
Breaca (5th cent.) Legend makes Breaca a disciple of Brigid of
Ireland, who emigrated to Cornwall with some companions.
Petroc (d. c. 594) Petroc was apparently the son of a Welsh prince.
Like so many of these Celtic-speaking guys, he studied in Ireland,
and eventually settled in Cornwall, where he founded at least two
monasteries.
Edfrith of Lindisfarne (d. 721) Edfrith became bishop of Lindisfarne
(Northumbria) in 698. He's credited with copying and illuminating
the Lindisfarne Gospels.
Cornelius McConchailleach (d. 1176) Cornelius was an Irishman who
became a canon at Armagh in 1140, abbot in 1151, and archbishop of
Armagh in 1174. He died in Savoy on his way back from a pilgrimage
to Rome, and a popular cult developed at his tomb.
