Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (1. June) is the feast day of:
Justin Martyr (d. 165) Often called the "first Christian
philosopher," Justin was from Nablus in the Holy Land. He studied
philosophy, but was converted to Christianity when about 30. J. was
martyred in Rome. Only two of his many writings survive.
Respondeo:
While attending a conference at Downside Abbey (organized by our very
own Carolyn Muessig) I went through a door (as in the Sleeping Beauty's
palace) and found myself in a gallery overlooking the church. In the
gallery was a glass case containing a pile of bones with a skull on the
top. A card informed me that these were the bones of Justin Martyr. I
asked one of the monks where they had got the relics of so great a
saint. His reply: "Didn't know we had them."
Bill.
