medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (30. June) is the feast day of:
Protomartyrs of Rome (d. 64) A large part of the city of Rome burned
in June 64, and Emperor Nero blamed the local Christians. He had the
local Christian community rounded up and killed in interesting ways,
such as sewing them up in animal skins and setting dogs on them, or
coating them in pitch and using them as torches in the public gardens.
Martial of Limoges and companions (d. c. 250?) Martial was
supposedly the first bishop of Limoges and apostle of the Limousin
region. Gregory of Tours tells that M. was one of seven missionary
bishops sent to Gaul from Rome. Later there was an effort to claim
sub-apostolic status for him. He seems to have been martyred with
two assistant priests.
Theobald of Provins (d. 1066) Theobald (Thibaut) was a noble from
Brie. After some time as a soldier he and a friend named Walter
became pilgrims. They eventually settled near Vicenza as hermits,
attracted disciples, and founded a Camaldolese monastery. T. was
canonized in 1073.
Arnulf of Villers (blessed) (d. 1228) Arnulf (Arnoul) was a native
of Brussels who started adulthood as a luxury-loving man about town
but converted and became a Cistercian lay brother at Villers in
Brabant. He spent the rest of his life being penitential and getting
very good at contemplative prayer.
