medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (24. June) is the feast day of:
John the Baptist (1st cent.) One of the extremely few saints (in
fact, I can't think of any others) commemorated on his birth day
instead of his death day (or sometimes day of translatio, or more
convenient date determined by later calendar emenders). John appears
prominently in the gospels as a prophet and forerunner of Christ.
Early tradition placed J's tomb at Samaria, but it was destroyed in
the reign of Julian, leaving the field open for conflicting claims to
relics, several medieval churches claiming especially his head.
Rumold (d. c. 775) Rumold appears to have been a monk, probably from
England, who became a missionary bishop and worked under St.
Willibrord in Holland and Brabant. He was murdered near Mechelen
(Belgium).
Ivan (9th cent.) Ivan was a Dalmatian who became a hermit at
Karlstein (Czech Republic). He was offered a court position but
refused and went back to his hermitage, only to end up murdered by
peasants.
Bartholomew of Farne (d. c. 1193) Bartholomew was a Dane, ordained
in Norway, who became a monk at Durham. He then took over Cuthbert's
old hermitage on the isle of Farne and lived there for 42 years.
