medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (10. May) is the feast day of:
Calepodius and companions (d. c. 232) This is a group of Romans
massacred by an anti-Christian mob in the reign of Alexander Severus.
Calepodius got a catacomb named after him; Palmatius was a consular
killed with 42 members of his household; the senator Simplicius was
killed with 65 household members.
Alphius, Philadelphus, and Cyrinus (251) A, P, and C are patrons of
Leontini in Sicily, martyred in the Decian persecution. Oddly, they
have a popular cult in Australia, with a shrine at Silkwood in
Queensland.
Comgall (d. c. 602) Comgall was a native of Ulster who became a monk
at Clonenagh before going on to found the monastery of Bangor (Co.
Down). His house produced a surprising number of monks who became
influential abroad (including Columbanus) and C. himself apparently
traveled to Scotland, Wales, and Cornwall.
Beatrice I d'Este (blessed) (d. 1226) Daughter of the marquis of
Ferrara, Beatrice was orphaned as a child and ran away from home to
become a nun. She died at the age of 20, at the convent she had
founded at Gemola. Her cult was confirmed in 1763.
Antoninus Pierozzi (1459) The Florentine Antoninus is a particularly
attractive example of a late medieval bishop. He was a Dominican who
became a prior at a young age and founded San Marco in Florence in
1436. In 1446 he was made archbishop of Florence and was known for
his care for the poor and general good conduct in office, as well as
for his writings on moral theology and law. A. was canonized in
1523, but his cult was confined to local calendars in 1969.
