medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (28. May) is the feast day of:
Holy Land martyrs (d. c. 410) A large number of monks massacred by
Bedouin raiders early in the reign of Theodosius II.
Germanus (Germain) of Paris (d. 576) Germanus was a priest near
Autun and abbot of a local monastery before he became a royal
chaplain and bishop of Paris in 555. He was influential, and
Childebert was impressed enough to found a monastery for G---later
known as Saint-Germain-des-Pres.
William of Gellone (d. 812) William was duke of Aquitaine. He built
a monastery (later named Saint-Guilhem-du-Desert) near Montpelier,
which he himself joined. W. was formally canonized in 1066.
Bernard of Menthon (d. c. 1081) The St. Bernard dog is named after
this saint, who was vicar-general of the diocese of Aosta (in the
Alps) for forty years. He was famous for his care of travelers
through the mountain passes, founding hospices in the two passes now
named after him. B. is the patron saint of mountaineers.
Albert of Csanad (d. c. 1492) Albert was a Magyar, a Pauline monk.
He was a Latin poet and orator.
Margaret Pole (blessed) (d. 1541) Margaret was a Plantagenet and was
ultimately a victim of Henry VIII of England's dislike of rival
claimants to the throne, exacerbated by Reginald Pole's denunciation
of Henry's supremacy over the English church. Margaret was countess
of Salisbury in her own right. When Reggie Pole refused to come back
to England, his mother Margaret was arrested and imprisoned for two
years, before finally being beheaded for high treason. She was
beatified in 1886.
