medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
The basic thrust (I do not presume to receive Communion trusting in my
own merits but approach as one needing healing etc.) is found in the two
basic prayers of preparation for Mass, one attributed to Ambrose, one to
Thomas Aquinas. They were (are) printed in most hand missals for the
use of laypeople. How far back the Ambrose one really goes, I do not
know.

The second prayer (Perceptio Corporis tui) doesn't seem to occur in the
Sarum Use, which Cranmer was largely freely translating and adapting.
His
prayer is marginally older than the Book of Common Prayer, as it first
occurs in his Order of the Communion of 1548.
