medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (18. May) is the feast day of:
Dioscorus of Kynopolis (d. c. 305) Dioscorus was a lector at
Kynopolis (Egypt). He was killed in the Great Persecution, burned to
death with red-hot plates.
Potamon (d. c. 340) Potamon was bishop of Heraclea (Upper Egypt).
In Maximinus Daza's persecution he was crippled in one leg, had one
eye knocked out, and was put to slave labor in a mine. He survived
that, and supported Athanasius at the council of Nicaea. The Arians
didn't like him, and eventually succeeded in murdering him.
John I (d. 526) John was a Tuscan who became pope in 523. He seems
to have been a traitor against King Theodoric of Italy---at least
Theodoric sent John on an embassy to Constantinople to try to
forestall a planned attack on Italy and win imperial tolerance of
Arianism. When he came back, Theo. seems to have found some evidence
that John plotted with the emperor against him. John died in prison
of ill-treatment.
Elgiva (d. 944) Elgiva was wife of King Edmund of ever-increasing
chunks of England, and mother of Kings Edwy and Edgar. She
re-founded the convent of Shaftesbury and spent the end of her life
there, maybe as a nun.
Eric IX of Sweden (d. 1160) Eric became king of Sweden in 1150. He
won the nickname "the Lawgiver," so I suppose we can assume he was a
reasonably good ruler. In 1157 he started conquering Finland---an
act of imperialist colonization that has been called a missionary
crusade. He was killed by rebels after attending church at Uppsala
and is regarded as a martyr. He's the patron saint of Sweden.
William de Naurose (blessed) (d. 1369) William was a native of
Toulouse who became an Augustinian friar. He was a great preacher,
specializing in Purgatory. W's cult was confirmed in 1893.
