these two from among the 550+ (!) scenes illustrating The Old English
Hexateuch (BL Cotton Claudius B. IV), from the second quarter of the 11th
century, perhaps done in Canterbury and almost surely reflecting at least one
other, previous, now-lost exemplar.
of course, one might ask what the Old English knew, before their liberation by
Bill the Bastard.
