medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (31. May) is the feast day of:
Petronilla (?) Petronilla has been venerated in Rome since early
days. Legends (all much later) tell that she helped care for St.
Peter during his time in Rome, and one account says she was Peter's
daughter (my source huffily says that she can't have been---but her
attribute is a bunch of keys---does that remind you of anyone?). In
1969 P's cult was confined to local calendars.
Hermias (d. 170) Hermias was a veteran soldier, martyred at Comana
in Cappodocia. He is an important eastern saint, and appears in the
(old?) Byzantine liturgy.
Helentrude (d. c. 950) Helentrude was a hermit in Westphalia
(Germany). She plays a significant role in the legends of St. Ursula.
Mechtild of Diessen (d. 1160) Mechtild was from Andechs (Bavaria),
daughter of the count. She was an oblate at the convent of Diessen
and in time became abbess there. In 1153 the bishop of Augsburg had
her reform the corrupt nunnery of Edelstetten, which she did despite
many obstacles. It must have helped that she had a wide reputation
as a thaumaturge.
Giovanna Varrano (blessed) (d. 1527) Giovanna was a daughter of the
duke of Varrano in Italy. In 1481 (at the age of 23) she became a
Poor Clare at Urbino. In 1499 she transferred to become abbess of
the convent her father had founded. G's cult was confirmed in 1843.
