medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Alternatively, instead of being greeted with the Doom/Last Judgement over
the main west portal or on the chancel arch, it might be portrayed on the
retro-facade which people saw if they were leaving through the west portal.
However, the snag in this idea seems to be that the west portal (ie in the
main facade) was not in everyday in many churches, but was reserved for
processional use on feast days etc. Unfortunately, I can't think of
referecnes for any of this, its the sort of thing one 'picks up' without
knowing the source of the idea (at least in my case).

that one entered the church from the west and was (usually) greeted with a
vision of the Last Judgment, with hell by far the more interesting of the
scenes. Devils of every sort played central roles. The west was associated
with death b/c of the setting sun. Usually the north porch, if decorated,
was full of Old Testament characters and scenes, indicating the darkness
that had not yet begun to give way to the light associated with the coming
of Christ.
