medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (12. May) is the feast day of:
Flavia Domitilla, Euphrosyna, and Theodora (d. c. 100) Flavia was a
great-niece of emperors Titus and Domitian. She was exiled as a
Christian. She may also have been martyred with two foster-sisters.
Then again, there may be two martyrs of the same name. Her cult was
deemed too confusing, and suppressed in 1969.
Nereus and Achilles (d. c. 100) Soldiers in the Praetorian Guard
who, according to their unreliable acta, where baptized by Peter and
exiled with Flavia Domitilla before they ended up decapitated.
*Their* cult hasn't been suppressed.
Epiphanius of Salamis (d. 403) Epiphanius was a native of Palestine
who became a monk at a young age. He founded a monastery east of
Gaza. He was virulently opposed to heresy, and his handbook of
heresies was famous. In 367 E. became bishop of Salamis (Cyprus).
Rictrude (d. 688) Rictrude was a Gascon noblewoman. She married St.
Adalbald and the two had four children who all wound up as saints.
After her husband was murdered, R. founded the convent of Marchiennes
near Douai and was abbess for 40 years.
Dominic de la Calzada (d. 1109) Dominic was from Vitoria in the
Basque region. He became a hermit in Rioja after failing to become a
monk. He built a bridge, a causeway, and a hospice to help pilgrims
to Compostela. I gather that "Calzada" is Spanish for "causeway."
Gemma of Goriano Sicoli (blessed) (d. 1249) Gemma was a shepherdess
who became a hermit at Goriano Sicoli in the Abruzzi, where she lived
for 42 years. Her cult was approved in 1890.
Imelda Lambertini (blessed) (d. 1333) An oppressively pious brat, it
sounds like. Imelda was apparently the daughter of a Bolognese noble
family. She so longed for her first communion that she received it
miraculously at the age of eleven---and died in a rapture the same
day. Her cult was confirmed in 1826.
