We are looking to change the way we deal with repeat renewals of stock.
Currently, customers are allowed to renew items for up to a maximum of 10
times (unless, of course, the item has been requested by someone else). At
this point, they have to bring the item back (partly to prove it still
exists). It is discharged from their ticket, but there is nothing to stop
the customer then taking it back out immediately and starting the process
all over again. A certain amount of abuse of the system is going on, with
stock in demand unavailable to other customers for long periods. It is the
sort of stock which customers tend to need right away, so setting reserves
doesn't usually help. We are looking at reducing the number of times an item
can be renewed and then not allowing immediate re-borrowing of that item. We
are also looking at certain heavily used areas of stock, such as Revision
Guides, possibly having a 'No renewals' sticker, to avoid 'hogging' of
stock.
Does anyone else have a problem with this sort of thing and, if so, how do
you deal with it, without having a bottomless budget to buy lots of copies?
I will, of course, post a summary of responses.
Many thanks
