Thanks to everyone who responded to my request for information about
policies for dealing with repeat renewals. I didn't get a huge response, but
here is a summary of the content of the responses:
* Luton's policy of allowing up to 10 renewals by phone is pretty much
out on a limb. Respondents all indicated 2 or 3 phone renewals only, then
the book had to come back. Immediate reborrowing was then normally allowed.
* The idea of not allowing immediate reborrowing once 10 renewals of
any kind had been made caused some debate, partly to do with customer
resistance and partly to do with front line staff being put in the firing
line for complaints.
* Social inclusion was cited as a problem with not allowing immediate
reborrowing, especially if such items were treated differently to ordinary
returns by being kept off the shelves until the next day. We would, however,
not be treating these items differently to 'ordinary' returns.
* Problems caused by repeat renewals were sometimes dealt with by
reservations being set against the title.
The gist of the responses has now been incorporated into the report to our
Director for consideration.
Thanks again to respondents.
