DCF / ePSINet Seminar
RE-USING PUBLIC SECTOR INFORMATION
10 am – 4.30 pm
21 June 2004
King’s Fund Conference Centre
11-13 Cavendish Square, London W1
Analysts argue that around 75% of information used in the private sector
was originally sourced from government, and that about 25% of information
services are direct re-sellers of government-sourced information. Clearly
the state of public sector information (PSI) flows for commercial re-use is
of vital concern to both public and private sectors.
To help DCF members gain the best understanding of the implications of the
new EU PSI directive and its UK implementation, we have joined forces with
the European Commission’s ePSINet action to hold a free Seminar on Re-Using
Public Sector Information for DCF members and affiliates
The commercial re-use of government information is essential to legal, map,
business, healthcare, directory and other publishers and service
providers. Increasingly this information needs to be international in
scope.
The idea is to make it easier for businesses to find local and central
government information content, to make pricing transparent, licensing
easy, reduce delays in response times and ensure a level playing field for
businesses.
So what now stands in the way of a vibrant and growing market in new value-
added products and services based on public sector information?
This joint DCF and ePSINet Seminar on Public Sector Information will bring
together major private and public sector stakeholders to
· assess the likely impact of the Directive on the UK market and
regulation;
· examine some of the problem areas that need to be addressed
· debate what else can be done to promote a stronger business
environment for PSI re-use, taking into account both public and private
sector perspectives from a number of information sectors such as legal,
geographic and local government.
The seminar is aimed at all stakeholders in the commercial re-use of PSI,
whether providers and users.
Speakers will include key decision makers from EU and DTI as well as
representatives from PSI providing organisations and commercial re-users.
The seminar will be chaired by David Worlock of EPS, Chair of the Digital
Content Form.
The Digital Content Forum (DCF) forms a two-way conduit between industry
and government to gather views and input into policy-making processes. DCF
members include trade associations and representative organisations from
digital and traditional media industries whose business interests lie in
the creation and commercial exploitation of digital content.
ePSINet, the European Public Sector Information Network, is a project
funded by the EU eContent programme to support cohesive approaches towards
Public Sector Information in Europe. It develops knowledge-sharing
relationships with and between sectoral organisations, while building
international co-operation with the USA and other countries.
