University of Leicester - United Kingdom
Postdoctoral Research Assistant
Structural Geology and Sedimentology
2-Year NERC Funded Appointment, available from 15 June, 2004
Closing Date: May 25, 2004
Salary: up to £26,603 p.a. (depending on experience)
The Orogenic Processes Group at the University of Leicester has recently received NERC funding to investigate geological and geophysical processes of intracontinental transpressional basin development in southern Mongolia. This new project builds on 15 years experience by Group scientists into the active deformation and tectonic evolution of Mongolia and adjacent regions of Central Asia and will run in parallel with a joint university-industry venture undertaking seismic reflection, seismic refraction and receiver function studies in unexplored basins of the Gobi Desert. The group is looking for a postdoctoral research assistant who will join a research team investigating the structural and sedimentological evolution of several actively forming transpressional basins in the central Gobi Altai area.
The postdoctoral scientist will spend two summer field seasons in Mongolia carrying out detailed studies of basin stratigraphy, sediment provenance, intra-basin structures, mountain front deformation and tectonic geomorphology. Results will be integrated with seismic, remote sensing and palynological data to document the 3-D architecture of several basins and to test models of evolutionary development. Full fieldwork costs and major conference attendance are supported. Applications are encouraged from individuals who enjoy fieldwork and have PhD level experience in sedimentological and structural geology field techniques. The University of Leicester is ranked in the top 20 universities in the UK by the Financial Times and is an equal opportunity employer.
