medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Many thanks for the reference. Damian has AHRB funding to help him with
this project and is definitely planning to publish something at the end
of it, so I'll keep you posted. I'll also pass on your comments about
Pontigny, because it sounds like somewhere in which he'd be very
interested. He records acoustics and then does something impressively
technical involving computers which allows him to recreate the acoustic
resonance of different places and buildings in a studio environment!

also, i wish he'd take a close look at the late 12th c. choir of
Pontigny
http://www.beloit.edu/~arthist/historyofart/gothic/pontigny.htm
and tell me why it has the *best* accoustics of any church i've ever
been in.
a chant in one of the radial chapels
http://www.beloit.edu/~arthist/historyofart/gothic/images/pontigny4.jpg
sets the whole thing *resonating*, not just with an echo.
in another life i helped Terryl Kinder do a careful measurement of that
choir
and we were both reasonably astounded at how *precisely* the thing was
laid
out --very, very small variations from one chapel to the other, all
around the
corona.
there is a kind of "copy" of it in the parish church at Chablis --not
too far
away-- but it is not nearly as carefully done and doesn't have nearly
the same
resonant quality.
