i wonder how the present Hierarchy handles it.
my very incomplete understanding of the actual reason for the medieval ban on
priestly (to say nothing of episcopal) marriage --or even concubinage-- was
concerned with the problem of the appropriation and inheritance of
ecclesiastical property.
this posed a real threat to the very existence of the church as an
institution, and the situation was already bad enough, goodness knows, in,
say, the 10th and 11th centuries.
