Medieval and Renaissance Music Conference
Glasgow, 15 - 18 July 2004
http://www.music.gla.ac.uk/Med-Ren/home.htm
The annual Medieval and Renaissance Music Conference returns to Scotland
in 2004. It is hosted by the University of Glasgow, in association with
the Royal Musical Association.
Around sixty individual presentations are planned by delegates from
Austria, Belgium, Canada, China, Czech Republic, Denmark, Germany, France,
Russian Federation, South Africa, Spain and USA, as well as from Scotland
and the United Kingdom, all with something new to say on medieval and
Renaissance music.
The keynote address will be given by Mary Carruthers (New York
University), author of The Book of Memory, whose work is as well known to
music historians as it is to medievalists generally.
Conference topics range from early medieval chant repertories to
17th-century chansons. There are sessions on memory and rhetoric, parody
and identity, medieval song culture, ritual motets, Obrecht, Petrucci,
Byrd, national traditions, visual and theoretical perspectives, to say
nothing of recitals, concerts and social events.
Main concert event will be Burkard Wehner's acclaimed vocal ensemble Vox
Nostra Berlin, making its UK debut with a concert of medieval songs,
chants and organa.
The conference happily coincides with the annual meeting in Glasgow of the
New Chaucer Society. There will be opportunities for delegates of both
conferences to meet at jointly arranged receptions and at the Saturday
night Conference dinner and ceilidh.
To help us plan the conference effectively please send in your
registration form as soon as possible. Note that the earlier you register
the less you pay - it's a bit like the airlines really, save that at least
we tell you the dates after which discounts no longer apply!
