medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Dear Colman,
Another useful article to check is Richard Hunt's classic from the 1930s, "English learning in the
late twelfth century," reprinted in R.W. Southern (ed.), Essays in Medieval History (London, 1968),
106-128.
He notes that many of the intellects in his period of study were Augustinian canons, but he doesn't
explore the reasons why and, alas, I don't think anyone really has since. In my own work, I've
noticed that Augustinian canons, though important ca. 1150-1200 in Oxford and London, vanish
as a group from the literary and academic scene with the coming of the friars.
Cheers,
