According to Eamon Duffy, in late medieval 'popular' tradition, the
anointing of Extreme Unction was considered to be so powerful that
anyone
who received extreme unction and subsequently recovered was required to
live as if dead to the world, abstaining from eating meat and from

activity. (I can't remember what evidence he cites for this -
