medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
As a child, I was told to stay clear of the catholic priest because he had
the power to put horns on you, even if you were a protestant. My more serious
question is, "Where do you look for the roots of such folklore?" English and
New England folklore from previous centuries is relatively free of
anti-catholic themes so far as my limited acquaintance with it goes. I suspect
that such stories as Chris Laning relates and the one I related above do not,
in fact, go back very far at all.
