I'm always on the lookout for alternative Guglielmos, being one myself.
St William of York, the local Guglielmo, is not very satisfactory. The
Yorkese wanted a saint of their own to rival Becket at Canterbury. In
fact William is credited with only one miracle: as he was crossing the
Ouse bridge into York it collapsed and several people fell into the
water. Our hero prayed fervently and they were saved. This may have
been because:
a) They could swim.
b) The water wasn't very deep.
c) The prayers of William were very efficacious.
In fact the good folk of York opted unanimously for option c) and
William was duly canonised. A bit thin, I always think.
Bill.
