medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
As (unfortunately) usual, I ascribed to the wrong person and song the prayer of Saint Richard. The song is "Day by Day" and the lyrics are:
day by day
day by day
oh dear lord
three things i pray
to see thee more clearly
love thee more dearly
follow thee more nearly
day by day
I do not remember who made the song popular.

Richard de Wych (d. 1253) .... bishop of Chichester
Dear Father Bill et al,
A famous pray is attributed to St Richard:
"Thanks be to thee, O Lord Jesu Christ, for all the cruel pains and
insults thou hast borne for me; for all the many blessings thou hast
won for me. O holy Jesus, most merciful Redeemer, friend and brother,
may I know thee more clearly, love thee more dearly, and follow thee
more nearly. Amen."
Does anybody know:
(1) If this is the same St Richard?
(2) Is the attribution correct?
(3) What is the original text of the prayer - presumably in Latin?
Can answer the first two points. Yes this is the same Richard and yes, this
is his prayer. I learnt this prayer in my schooldays in Portsmouth some 50
years ago. It is still used regularly in Anglican (and almost certainly in
Roman Catholic) circles in Chichester & Portsmouth Diocese and probably by
other local denominations since St Richard is still a well known historical
character here in the middle of the South of England.
I am afraid I do not know it in Latin nor where the original is to be found.
