Most people will by now have seen the recent piece in Update about the
Dagger in the Library Award, so this is just to re-inforce what you have
already read. And please read on past the technical details to a suggested
way of participating.......
This is a Crime Writers' Association award, sponsored by Random House, and
nominated and judged entirely by librarians. Libraries have until 16th
August 2004 (but sooner is fine!) to produce nominations ? one per library,
but a second choice may be included to assist the judges in case of a tie.
You are asked to supply a statement in support of your first choice (100
words maximum, please). Please submit this on your library's headed
notepaper as proof of identity. Nominations should be sent by the closing
date to: Dagger in the Library, PO Box 224, Guiseley, Leeds LS20 8WT. Last
year I did have some invalid nominations from libraries, e-mailed in direct
from the CWA website, and I'm afraid anything like that is rejected. Any
queries can be e-mailed to me or to: [log in to unmask]
Details and forms are available on the CWA's website - www.thecwa.co.uk and
will shortly be on Random House's (if they're not already there)
www.randomhouse.co.uk, and I do have some fliers I can send out to anyone
who wants them (they incorporate the nomination forms, and as it's only
librarians who can nominate they're not really suitable for massive
displays). If anybody would like any, please e-mail me your address and the
number you'd like - up to a maximum of 15 unless you're a huge authority,
and then we can negotiate!
The CWA Gold, Silver, Diamond etc. Daggers have an increasingly high
national profile, with the winners' books being stickered and so on. This
hasn't happened yet with the Dagger in the Library, but I think it is
something we should work very hard towards - raising the profile of a
national award with the word Library in can only do us good!!
Some library authorities see this as a very good occasion for involving
their Readers' Groups, and Julie Potton of Derbyshire Libraries and
Heritage is running the following event at her library: "We are having a
Dagger evening at my library on 29th June, run along the lines of other
prize evenings we've held in the past. We have 6 people lined up to
champion 6 authors and whoever wins the vote, voted for by the audience on
the night, will be my library's nomination and possibly second".
The number of nominations we received last year was very disappointing, and
I'd love to receive sacksful this year - please!
Thanks,
Judith Rhodes
