14,15,16 June 2004
Institute of Child Health, London
This course is for health care professionals who want to become more
efficient at using the best available research evidence in their day to day
decisions about patients. We will use examples of clinical problems in
maternal and child health, although the skills learnt are generic and
relevant to all health professionals.
Aims of the course:
The course introduces health professionals to the skills required for
evidence-based practice. These include how to:
· frame answerable questions from practice or policy problems
· find the best available evidence to answer the question
· critically appraise research for its validity and usefulness
· incorporate the findings into decisions
Course content
The three day course consists of plenary seminars, small group
problem-solving and appraisal sessions using examples in maternal and child
health , and practical sessions on how to search the scientific
literature. Key features are an emphasis on multi professional groups, a
high tutor-participant ratio, opportunities throughout the workshop for
hands-on access to the Internet and scientific literature, and techniques
for prioritising information needs and dealing with uncertainty.
