I don't like the idea of using a hash as a version: I've heard it suggested
that a hash be used to generate an unique identifier (or part of one), but
as you say it gives no idea of which is the earlier version of two.
Seems to me that there are some parallels with editions and printings of
books. Like any analogy it breaks if you push it too far. Anyway would it
be possible to have a version for the XML source and a version for the XSLT
and to concatenate them to give the version of the HTML document? (a bit
like "second edition, fifth printing")
