medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
I've already answered this on Britarch. The word (and name) 'steeple' just
means 'tall tower' (not necessarily including a spire). Ainderby Steeple
church has a tall tower (without a spire), although the place-name pre-dates
the present tower.
