medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (18. April) is the feast day of:
Apollonius the Apologist (d. c. 190) Apollonius was a Roman senator,
denounced as a Christian by one of his slaves and decapitated. He
wrote a defence of Christianity ("apologia") that is still extant in
an Armenian version.
Laserian (Molaise) (d. 639) Laserian was an important Irish
churchman. He founded the monastery and diocese of Leighlin (Co.
Carlow) and also that strangely desolate and well-preserved
monastery, Inishmurray (Co. Sligo). He promoted the celebration of
Easter in accordance with Roman practice.
Ursmar (d. 713) A very important figure in the conversion of
Flanders, Ursmar was abbot of Lobbes as well as a missionary bishop.
Perfectus (d. 851) Perfectus was a priest of Cordoba who spoke
publicly against Islam and was beheaded on Easter Sunday.
Herluca (d. 1127) Herluca was a nun at Epfach, a strong supporter of
Gregory VII in his fight against Henry IV. For this she was
expelled, and ended up at Bernried (near Augsburg).
Galdinus della Sala (d. 1176) Galdinus was a Milanese nobleman who
became a priest and then archdeacon. He had to flee the city when
Frederick Barbarossa attacked, but in 1165 he was named both cardinal
and archbishop of Milan despite his absence. G. returned to a mostly
ruined city, and his greatest act was to lead rebuilding efforts. G.
was also a great preacher and a rare and useful peacemaker in a very
unsettled time (like most of Italian history).
Werner (d. 1287) A very dubious saint of a cult popular in the
Middle Ages but never pontifically confirmed. Werner, according to
his legend, was a teenager who worked in a Jewish vineyard at
Oberwesel (Rhineland). His employer killed the kid at Easter in
hatred of Christianity.
