medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Edwin replies:
The attitude may, but much of the specific anti-Catholicism in America
came about during the flight of poor Catholic immigrants (Italians,
Poles, Irish etc.) from Europe to America in the 18 and 19th centuries
which spawned urban ghettos and resultant crime.
Respondeo: I read an interesting article in one of the American
periodicals - Harper's, or Atlantic Review - a year or two ago which
pointed out that William Bonney, alias Billy the Kid, was a Catholic of
Irish descent, and Pat Garrett, who shot him, was a Protestant of
Northern Irish descent, and the whole affair was in fact a sectarian
fracas which has been reinterpreted rather drastically by history.
But now, back to scholarly discussion of medieval religion and culture.
Bill.
