Post-Baccalaureate Program in Hebrew and Jewish Studies
The University of Pennsylvania's College of General Studies and the
Graduate Group in Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations are pleased to
announce a new program for students who wish to continue the formal study
of Hebrew and Jewish Studies beyond the B.A. without immediately entering
an M.A. or Ph.D. program.
This program is designed for students who already have at least two years
of college Hebrew (proficiency level), wish to gain additional fluency in
reading Hebrew literature, and want to explore graduate study in Jewish
Studies and life in a large university. The Post-Baccalaureate Program
aims to offer such students a rigorous -- yet inexpensive and flexible --
way to improve their reading facilities, develop textual skills in Hebrew
literature, and explore further areas of Jewish Studies.
THE PROGRAM
The post-baccalaureate Program requires full-time study in residence for
two semesters. Each semester, students will register for three courses:
1) A year-long seminar required of all students in the Program which will
involve reading representative texts in Hebrew literature from different
historical periods.
2) A small study group geared toward the special interests of groups of
students. For example, where one group might concentrate upon Biblical or
Rabbinic texts, another might choose to focus on legal literature through
the ages.
3) An elective chosen by the student, in consultation with the Program's
faculty advisor.
APPLICATION
To initiate application, students should send a transcript, a personal
statement of educational background and ambitions, and two letters of
recommendation from faculty who know their language work to:
Post-Baccalaureate Advisor, Hebrew and Jewish Studies
College of General Studies
3440 Market Street, Suite 100
Philadelphia, PA 19104
215-898-7326
There is no fee for this preliminary application. Applicants will
ordinarily be notified of a decision within one month. At that point,
students who wish to enroll in the program will apply for admission ($55
fee; $20 late fee) to the College of General Studies. Admission to or
enrollment in the Post-Baccalaureate Program does not constitute nor
guarantee admission to any graduate or other academic program at the
University of Pennsylvania.
TUITION AND FEES
Students formally enroll for three course units per
semester. Post-baccalaureate tuition and fees for this program are subject
to change each fiscal year; we project tuition and fees for 2004-2005 to
total $4,101 per semester. All tuition and fee charges are subject to the
approval of the Trustees of the University of Pennsylvania and may change
without notice. Room and board in University facilities are available, but
students may also live on their own in the city and surrounding neighborhoods.
Upon completion of the program, the University of Pennsylvania will award
six undergraduate course units (equivalent to 18 or 24 semester hours
elsewhere). While Penn cannot guarantee that other universities will
accept and apply these credits, a year devoted to the concentrated
supervised study of Hebrew and Jewish studies often improves a student's
credentials for further work. Such a year, free from the distractions and
obligations of ordinary work toward a degree, can also be an unusually
fruitful educational experience in itself.
