medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (27. April) is the feast day of:
Theodore of Tabennesis (d. c. 368) Theodore was from near Thebes
(Egypt) who went off and became a favorite disciple of St. Pachomius.
Pachomius' successor, Horsiesius, was driven out by rebellious monks
and Theodore took his place as abbot.
Asicus (Tassach) (d. c. 490) Irish legend makes Asicus an early
follower of St. Patrick, credited with becoming first abbot (although
monasteries didn't exist in Ireland in Pat's time) and bishop of
Elphin (Co. Roscommon). He was a coppersmith; some work attributed
to him still survives.
Adelhelm of Etival (d. 1152) Adelhelm was a native of Flanders. He
became a disciple of Bernard of Tiron and in time founded the
monastery of Etival-en-Charnie (in the Jura, France).
Zita (d. 1278) Zita was from near Lucca. She became a domestic
servant in the city at age twelve and spent the rest of her life
there. She gave her own food and clothing to the poor---and her
master's after she had used up her own supplies. The household
didn't take kindly to this at first, but Zita eventually won them
over. Her cult was confirmed in 1696; she is the patron saint of
domestic servants.
Peter Armengol (blessed) (d. 1304) Peter was a Catalonian noble who
had a rowdy youth but repented and joined the Mercedarian order. He
offered himself as a hostage for eighteen Christian children in north
Africa---when the ransom wasn't paid he was hanged. The ransom money
arrived a few hours later so he was cut down---and found to still be
alive. So he was released. Despite the fact that he survived the
experience, he is venerated as a martyr. P's cult was confirmed in
1686.
James of Bitetto (blessed) (d. c. 1485) James was from the region
that is now Croatia and became a Franciscan lay brother at Zadar.
Somehow he made it to Italy, and spent most of his life at the friary
of Bitetto near Bari. His cult was approved in 1700.
