so it should be with Auvergne.
if The Auvergne ever becomes a country and wants to call itself "Auvergne".

mmmm... not in the edition i have before my eyes (Unabridged 6th ed., 2002) :
AUVERGNAT: ...of _ou_ from [the] [sic] Auvergne... inhabitant _ou_ native of
[the] [sic] Auvergne.
thus suggesting that both usages are okeydoakie.
More to the point might be the *Oxford*-Hachette:
AUVERGNE : l'~ the [sic] Auvergne.
AUVERGNAT: Navtive of the [sic] Auvergne; inhabitant of the [sic] Auvergne.
clearly the usage is in flux, with the Ancient, Eloquent locution based upon
an educated tradition coming under assault from careless usage by both the hoi
and also the poloi.
at the present moment of equipoise both are "correct".
a common enough occurance, rather like an ancient coin with a fine,
high-relief image being worn down by being carried round in too many pockets.
