You are absolutely right Herwig! - Perhaps should it be added why this scene
is justified in a church?
The picture with the tower on the war elephant was the standard
representation of the scene in the 'Speculum humanae salvationis'
as one of the three typological scenes referring to the Crucifixion.
See chapter 24 in the Speculum H.S. (Latin version in 42 chapters).
The four scenes are:
*The Crucifixion ('Ihesus pendens in cruce')
*King Nebuchadnezzars Dream of a Tree (Daniel cap.iv)
*The Voluntary Death of Codrus King of Athens (Valerius Maximus Liber V.)
*Eleazar kills the Elephant and dies himself (i.Macchabeorum vi.cap.)
Good pictures are available on the site of the Royal Library in Copenhagen
(www.kb.dk) e-lectra, especially from manuscript GKS 79 Spegel der
minschliken Salicheit, go to folio 56v-57-57v-58
