Nor was it alone.
As announced yesterday by the Eparchy of Raska and Prizren, at
http://www.serbia.sr.gov.yu/news/2004-03/23/333663.html ,
at least 30 churches and monasteries were similarly "destroyed or severely
damaged" -
among them at least a dozen dating to the period studied and discussed on
this List.
Christopher directed us to
www.kosovo.com ,
where before and after images illuminate the loss of the Holy Virgin of
Lyevish.
Another page there,
http://www.kosovo.com/default2.html ,
provides a harrowing map of churches and monasteries across the former
Yugoslavia
which are keyed to being destroyed, mined, burned, pillaged, damaged, and/or
broken into.
Frightening as it is, the map is dated December 1999.
Phyllis' daily posting for March 24th includes notice of Simon of Trent
(d.1474):
"a two-year-old child of Trent who died under mysterious
circumstances on Good Friday. Word got around that he had been
ritually murdered by Jews...the cult was suppressed in 1965."
I bring this up because the heartbreaking violence unleashed this week
on the 30 churches and monasteries -
not to mention upon the Serbs themselves -
was provoked by a similar situation:
Rumors that three Albanian children had been drowned by Serbian pursuers.

To wit: "Today's violent incidents around Kosovo were sparked after claims
that the boys had been chased into the river by Serbs with a dog.... [but]
this was definitely not true according to the account of the surviving boy."
As Jim Bugslag commented this morning,
"It is sad -- but fascinating -- to realize the extent of the survival of
iconoclastic fanaticism."
