medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Dear listmemebers,
Regarding the finding of miraculous statues of Mary in trees, I know of one
particularly famous shrine of Kosovo - Majka Bozia Letnicka - that is, Our
Lady of Letnica (Letnica being the name of the small mountain village where
it is located). I have visited the shrine on a number of occasions and it
has its origins in a similar legend. Thousands of pilgrims visited Letnica
for many years, claiming many cures and other miracles but, since the war,
the shrine has been left virtually deserted. Just on a point of interest,
it was at this shrine that the young Mother Teresa of Calcutta (who was on
a visit there from her native Skopje, Macedonia, as a child) first
contemplated the religious life.
Best wishes,
Salvador Ryan
