medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Today (31. March) is the feast day of:
Acacius Agathangelus (d. c. 251) What seem to be Acacius' authentic
acta are still extant. The account tells that Acaius was a bishop
somewhere in western Asia Minor. He was arrested in the Decian
persecution, but gave such a good defence of Christianity at his
trial that the judges were impressed and set him free. A's cult is
popular in the orthodox churches.
Benjamin (d. c. 431) Benjamin was a Persian deacon. He was
imprisoned in the reign of Shah Varanes, but released on the
condition that he stop preaching Christianity. But then he did. So
he was tortured and then killed in a particularly nasty way, impaled
on a knotty stake, so it would take longer for it to reach a vital
organ.
Guy of Pomposa (d. 1046) Guy was a native of Ravenna. He spent time
as a hermit then became a monk at Pomposa (and eventually abbot). He
was a scholarly sort who encouraged biblical exegesis, and can also
claim sanctity because in his later years he was unjustly persecuted
by the bishop of Ravenna.
Jeanne of Toulouse (blessed) (d. 1286) Jeanne was a noblewoman
affiliated with the Carmelite order. She remained in her parental
home training upcoming Carmelite friars; thus she is considered the
first Carmelite tertiary. J's cult was confirmed in 1895.
Daniel of Venice (d. 1411) Daniel was a German merchant who set up
shop and home near the Camaldolese monastery at Murano. He lived
under their rule as a hermit while continuing his business (!) and
giving the proceeds to the poor. D. was killed by robbers.
Bonaventure Tornielli (blessed) (d. 1491) Bonaventure was a native
of Forli (Italy). He became a Servite and was an active preacher in
the Papal States and the kingdom of Naples. For a time he was also
vicar-general of the order. His cult was confirmed in 1911.
