thanks for the kind words, André-Yves.
the site still exists, but had to be taken from public view for technical
reasons.
i'll be glad to supply more information to anyone who is interested,
off-list.

about Hardouin de Chartres ?
i thought about answering your initial enquiry about Hardouin on the list, but
didn't, simply because i don't know anything about him.
a first question might be what "of Chartres" might mean in your 11th century
(Breton, i assume) context.
it is possible (probable?) that *anyone* from the town of Chartres --or even
from the region-- might be styled "of Chartres" in a document from another
region.
i.e., at this period "de Chartres" was a toponymic rather than a "family
name".
there *was* a specific family with the cognomen "of Chartres" in the late 12th
and 13th century --there was an important Templar knight (head of the order??)
who is so styled and, i *think* i came across some genealogical information
about him, somewhere, but simply cannot recall.
i believe his name was "Willelmus", and i don't recall seeing anyone in that
family with the prenom "[H]arduinus".
as you know, the "namengut" --the stock of names used by a particular family--
is one of the few useful tools we have to sort out what family a particular
fellow might belong to, especially in the earlier periods.
as a name, "Harduinus" occurs (this is a *very* dim memory, so don't hold me
to it) among the Viscounts of Chartres --but, earlier, not in the 11th
century, i don't believe.
apparently there was a brother of Bishop Raginfredus (d. 960) named "Arduinus"
who suceeded him, if i'm reading the Latin rightly.
(see the "Vetus Aganus" chronicle published in the Cartulary of St. Peter's :
"Post obitum denique sepe memorandi præsulis Ragenfredi, episcopavit frater
ejus Arduinus, locum ejus obtinens, non religionem; qui fastu superbiæ
tumidus plus equo secularem sequebatur ambitionem.")
it is not a common name in the region.
one place to start might be to look in the index of the _Obituaires_ of the
region published by A. Molinier under the auspices of the Academie des
Inscriptions.
(this edition is more complete and reliable than the necrology of the
cathedral published by Lucien Merlet in the Cartulaire de Notre-Dame de
Chartres. it can be consulted on-line --with difficulty-- via the very
helpful "Gallica" site of the Bibliotheque Nationale, http://gallica.bnf.fr )
then you could look in the indicies to the various cartularies of the region,
especially that of the cathedral and of the abbey of St. Peter's of Chartres,
which are the richest sources of charters from the 11th century.
i happen to have a digitized edition of the St. Peter's cartulary, which i
sell at a modest price, and will try remember to do a search on the various
forms of the name this evening at home. (anyone interested in the digital
edition can contact me off-list.)
essentially, the necrologies and charters are the only sources we have for the
11th-12th centuries, this region not being at all rich in narrative sources
(though Ordericus Vitalis does mention quite a few Chartres folks in his
Historia, and the index to that should be checked as well).
best from here,
christopher
